
Biology shapes more of the world than most people realise. It’s behind the medicines that save lives, the food we eat, the way we protect the environment, and the science that helps solve global problems. And the jobs you can do with biology are just as varied.
As part of National Biology Week, we’re looking at some of the real careers biology can lead to. One of them is in Quality Control, a part of science that makes sure products are safe, effective, and ready to use. To see what that looks like in action, we spoke to Joshua Kenny, a Laboratory Assistant apprentice at ThermoFisher, about what his role involves and the skills he’s building along the way.
Tell us about your role and what you do day to day.
I currently work in the Quality Control department, where I support antimicrobial susceptibility testing. This process involves culturing specific bacteria and testing them on Sensititre plates, which contain antimicrobials at a range of concentrations. These plates can also be customised by customers to suit their testing requirements.

Within QC, we are also responsible for testing raw materials that arrive on site, as well as verifying the quality of in-house manufactured materials before they are incorporated into Sensititre plates.
