Level 3 Apprentice
Back

We caught up with Tom Kenny, a Level 3 apprentice at Pharmaron, to hear about his experience balancing study and work. He shares how he applied his learning on the job, the support he received, and how the apprenticeship shaped his career. Tom also reflects on his next steps and the benefits of apprenticeships for young people.

How was the study and work balance? Could you see what you had learnt being put into practice in your day-to-day role?

Balancing study and work during my apprenticeship was challenging at times, but it was manageable with good time management and support from my mentors. There were periods when coursework deadlines and practical work demands overlapped, which required me to stay organised and plan my study time effectively.

I could definitely see what I had learned being put into practice in my day-to-day role. For example, understanding instrumentation principles and electrical circuits helped me troubleshoot and calibrate equipment more efficiently. The knowledge I gained from my NVQ coursework gave me a deeper understanding of the processes I was working on, making me more confident in my tasks. Learning about health and safety regulations was also very relevant, as I applied that knowledge daily to ensure a safe working environment. I was also given extra resource from my mentors on site who were always there for support and guidance.

How did Pharmaron support you during you programme?

Pharmaron was very supportive throughout my apprenticeship, providing me with the guidance and resources needed to succeed. My mentors played a crucial role in my development, always being available to answer questions and offer practical advice. They took the time to explain complex concepts, ensuring I understood both the theoretical and practical aspects of my role. I was given opportunities to work on real projects, which helped reinforce what I was learning in my studies. The team was always willing to share their knowledge and experience, which made a big difference in building my confidence and skills. Whether it was technical training, feedback sessions, or just general encouragement, the support I received from my mentors and colleagues made my apprenticeship a positive and valuable experience.

What are your next steps?

My next step is to transition into an Electrical & Instrumentation role at a new company, as unfortunately there is no permanent position available at Pharmaron. I am excited about this new opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge I have gained during my apprenticeship. I plan to continue developing my expertise in instrumentation and electrical systems, gaining more hands-on experience in the field. In the future, I may also consider further development courses and certifications to enhance my career prospects and stay up to date with industry advancements.

How did you find the programme and experience overall, what overarching impact has it had for you?

Overall, I found the apprenticeship programme at Pharmaron to be a highly valuable and rewarding experience. It provided me with a strong foundation in instrumentation and electrical systems, combining hands-on work with theoretical learning. The balance between practical tasks and coursework helped me develop both technical and problem-solving skills, making me feel more confident in my abilities. One of the biggest impacts of the programme has been the experience and knowledge I’ve gained, which have prepared me for the next step in my career. Working alongside experienced mentors has been invaluable, as they helped me apply my learning in real-world situations and develop a professional approach to my work. This apprenticeship has not only given me a qualification but also shaped my career path. It has opened new opportunities, such as my upcoming role, and has reinforced my interest in this field. I now feel well-equipped to progress further in my career and continue developing my skills.

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship for young people?

As a Level 3 apprentice, I’ve experienced firsthand the many benefits an apprenticeship can offer to young people. One of the biggest advantages is gaining hands-on experience in a real working environment while also working towards a recognised qualification. Instead of just learning theory in a classroom, I’ve been able to apply my knowledge in real-world situations, which has helped me develop both my technical skills and confidence. Another key benefit is earning a wage while learning. Unlike going to university, where students often take on debt, an apprenticeship allows you to gain valuable industry experience without financial strain. This means I’ve been able to support myself while building a career at the same time.

The support and mentorship from experienced professionals have also been invaluable. Working alongside skilled engineers has helped me learn practical problem-solving skills, understand workplace expectations, and develop professionally. The knowledge and experience I’ve gained have made me more employable and have opened new career opportunities.

Overall, my apprenticeship has been a great stepping stone into the industry, giving me both the skills and experience to progress in my career with confidence. For young people looking for a hands-on approach to learning and a direct route into the workforce, an apprenticeship is a great option.
