For Alice Bardgett, an apprenticeship became the perfect path to match her practical, hands-on learning style. Instead of heading straight to university, Alice opted for a unique route that allowed her to gain invaluable industry experience while earning a respected qualification. And the best part? She’s thriving in a global company, achieving incredible milestones, learning new skills, and making connections that are setting her up for an exciting future.
As someone who is a practical hands on learner, my apprenticeship has given me an alternative option to university that suits my learning style. I'm already learning so much and being able to put the theory into real life projects and work is so valuable. I'm constantly learning about the industry and meeting so many interesting people along the way whilst gaining work experience with a global company. I was so unsure about the next steps after sixth form and I'm so glad I took the apprenticeship route.
Why did you choose an Apprenticeship rather than University?
I wasn't 100% about my next steps after A-levels but knew university wasn't for me. I took a year out to figure out what I wanted to do ad during this time gained experience in the industry I gained a passion for. An apprenticeship is the full package like university it offers a respected qualification and social aspects but an apprenticeship also offers on the job experience which is extremely valuable. It allows you to put the learning into practise which for me suited my learning style more.
What's your favourite thing about the company you work for?
The people! Everyone is very welcoming and supportive. I feel comfortable turning to my team for support and they are always happy to help.
Can you tell us a little about what you’re studying?
I am studying marketing management and I am in my first year. So far I have been learning about how to write a successful marketing plan and the different models you can use to support your marketing plan. I have also been learning about how to promote products and the best channels to use for different campaigns.
How does your manger support your learning?
I have a weekly meeting with my manager to catch up and discuss any issues or tasks that need completed. At the start of every quarter we sit down together and watch a video provided by the university showing the content for that quarter. My manager can then provide me with similar work and support me where needed.
What’s the Apprentice community like?
The apprentice community makes the course easier and more enjoyable. It is amazing to be able to speak to apprentices past and present and learn about their experience, they are always there to listen and help so you never feel alone.
What is the best thing about being an Apprentice?
The best thing for me about being an apprentice is the skills you gain. You get a respected qualification alongside hands-on experience in an industry you are passionate about which is extremely valuable given the high expectations employers have. It really sets you up for your next steps and ensures you are ready for whatever the future holds.
What is the most challenging thing about being an apprentice?
I think the most challenging part is balancing the learning and the work aspects. You have to be really self-motivated to keep on top of everything, completing it to a good standard but also strict on yourself to not overdo it as there is always more you can do.
What has the best day of your apprenticeship been so far and why?
The best day for me was during the first month I joined. Pfizer put on a lunch on the lawn event and it was a great opportunity to meet everyone and network in a casual setting. It was a relaxed afternoon with amazing food and a chance to properly speak to everyone and get to know everyone within the company. It was a sunny day as well which always helps!
Would you recommend an Apprenticeship to others and if so what tips would you share with them?
Yes 100%! Taking the apprenticeship route was the best decision for me, it suits my learning style and has provided me with amazing experience in an industry I am passionate about. I wasn't sure about my next steps after A-levels and didn't want to miss out on the "uni experience" however I don’t feel like I have missed out by choosing an apprenticeship, in fact I think it has benefited me more.
Can you tell us what qualification you’ll gain through your apprenticeship?
I will gain a level 6 degree in Marketing management.
