About Heriot Watt University:

We are looking to appoint a Modern Apprentice at our Heriot-Watt Orkney campus to develop skills in business support, IT, technical and facilities support. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support buildings and facilities, assisting with lab work and fieldwork, undertaking IT/AV tasks and providing general support.

The role is a 12 month apprenticeship with the possibility of further employment if the apprenticeship is completed successfully.

About the role:

The role is based at our Heriot-Watt campus in Stromness, supporting the International Centre for Island Technology within the Institute of Life and Earth Sciences in the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, this apprenticeship offers an opportunity to develop a range of skills in business support, IT, technical and facilities support. The balance of duties will vary day to day and will require someone who is adaptable and flexible, and accustomed to working in a team. Full training will be provided, with the successful candidate completing a qualification in Digital Applications through QA.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Orkney Campus Manager but will also work collaboratively with colleagues in Information Services, Technical Services, Health & Safety, Estates and other areas across the University, as well as with the team based at the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus (ORIC) and with external stakeholders as required.

Responsibilities: 

  • Act as the first point of contact for IT and AV support for staff, students and visitors, including new equipment set-up, troubleshooting and supporting events, using UniDesk ticketing system as the main point-of-contact with users and colleagues, as well as regular interaction and training via Teams.
  • Provide business support as required, under the direction of the Orkney Campus Manager, using the Microsoft365 applications on a daily basis.
  • Undertake small projects to support the campus under the direction of the Director of the Orkney Campus and the Orkney Campus Manager.
  • Provide technical support for teaching and research fieldwork and field trips, including student projects.
  • Support academics and research students with preparation, maintenance and storage of fieldwork equipment 
  • Maintain equipment inventory and consumable stocks through Excel and Asset management, an integral component of the UniDesk ITSM platform.
  • Maintain registers of equipment for insurance purposes and ensuring that equipment has been tested and is fit for purpose
  • Ensure regular maintenance of stored equipment and disposal of equipment no longer required in liaison with Orkney Campus Manager and relevant academic staff. 
  • Assist with providing buildings and facilities support, working closely with the Orkney Campus Manager and liaising with Orkney Research & Innovation Campus colleagues, HW Estates and external contractors as appropriate.
  • Assist with routine building inspections and compliance checks, reporting any issues and ensuring that they are addressed. 
  • Assist with building safety tours and inductions for all new staff, students and visitors

Required skills:

  • Minimum of three general Standard Graces/National 5s are required, two of which should be in English and Maths.
  • Experience in any relevant work or activity that required problem solving and analytical skills.
  • IT literacy.
  • Ability to communicate easily and understandably in English.
  • Demonstrable aptitude for the skills taught in the apprenticeship.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.

Desirable skills:

  • Have a full, clean driving license with the ability to drive hire cars and small vans.

Salary: £23,350 per annum.

Working hours: 35 hours per week, working Monday to Friday.
