Equipment Technician

Location: Our Equipment Technician team operates over two sites – Oak Tree House (BB18) and Coleby House (BD23)
Salary: £27,297 – £42,000 per annum, Senior Equipment Technician skills, capabilities and experience required for maximum salary
Hours: 40 per week, Monday – Friday
Contract: Full time, Permanent

We are open to appointing either an Equipment Technician or Senior Equipment Technician, depending on the skills, experience, and capability demonstrated at interview.

Salary ranges:

  • Equipment Technician: £27,297.09 – £32,500
  • Senior Equipment Technician: £32,000 – £42,000

Regardless of level, you will help support the daily operation of our laboratories by maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting a wide range of equipment.

The role is split across both sites and plays an important part in ensuring equipment remains safe, reliable, and compliant with regulatory standards.

The Senior position carries additional responsibility, including leadership of certain activities, supporting colleagues, overseeing maintenance schedules, and acting as a subject matter expert during audits.

Both roles include:

  • Carrying out routine equipment maintenance according to planned schedules
  • Working closely with laboratory leaders to minimise disruption during maintenance
  • Acting as a first point of contact for equipment issues
  • Troubleshooting faults and completing repairs where possible
  • Updating documentation to support compliance and internal procedures
  • Maintaining stock of equipment spares and consumables
  • Completing equipment monitoring tasks
  • Supporting improvement projects and identifying more efficient ways of working
  • Ensuring all work meets GMP and UKAS requirements
  • Raising purchase orders for equipment and consumables

Additional responsibilities for Senior Equipment Technician:

  • Monitoring progress against planned maintenance schedules
  • Leading discussions with stakeholders regarding equipment matters
  • Providing guidance and support to Equipment Technicians
  • Acting as SME for equipment during audit activity
  • Writing and executing equipment qualification protocols
  • Coordinating external service engineers and service contracts
  • Leading training on new or existing equipment
  • Assisting investigations into equipment failures
  • Completing computerised system validation tasks (CSV), including IQ/OQ/PQ
  • Administering instrument-related software

Qualifications & Experience

Equipment Technician Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry or a related subject, or at least 2 years’ experience in a similar laboratory environment
  • At least 1 year experience in an Equipment Technician role in a related laboratory environment.

Necessary Skills (all roles):

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Practical experience maintaining or repairing machinery or electronic equipment
  • Good written documentation skills
  • Competent IT skills, including understanding of basic hardware/software
  • Full UK driving licence

Preferred skills:

  • Experience with Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, or CDS systems
  • Knowledge of GMP and ISO 17025
  • Experience of equipment validation (essential for Senior role)
