The Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry department at Jazz Pharmaceuticals are looking for a highly motivated student with a passion for analytical chemistry to join our team on a 12-month internship.

Undergraduate with at least 2 years of study or Graduate in a Chemistry based degree
Salary - £24,000 per annum

Job Description
The Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry (D&MC) Analytical Chemistry 12-month Internship is designed to expose a selected individual to some of the key activities and responsibilities of analytical scientists in the early drug development process. The internship will focus on the development and execution of methods for the examination of bioanalytical samples by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS), providing data to support DMPK studies for early drug candidates. The position will complement and significantly add to their university learning experience and provide highly valuable industrial experience. The focus of this internship is to also gain familiarization with Jazz Pharmaceuticals and the various projects, tasks, and work that the Discovery and Medicinal Chemistry department contributes to the overall success of the company. The intern will gain a positive experience of Jazz Pharmaceuticals and could potentially apply for a full-time role in the future.
Job Responsibilities
Working very closely with the assigned supervisor on:

Learning and understanding the importance of, and implementing, the laboratory risk assessment process to underpin safe laboratory working.

Conducting laboratory operational tasks and experiments.

Learning to interpret their experimental observations/results and to manage their workload/experimental strategy.

Developing an understanding of complex biological sample preparation.

Learning to use UHPLC-MS/MS equipment as required.

Presentation of their work in team and project meetings.
-
Writing one or more summary reports during the placement.

The role will involve a combination of laboratory work (mostly standing) and desk/PC work.
Other responsibilities
-
Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and training expectations.

Deliver on any university course requirements.

Work with biological tissue samples.
Evaluations
-
Evaluation will initially be provided via verbal feedback from the intern’s supervisor.
-
Further to the above, ongoing evaluation will be given at the midpoint and end of the internship. The midpoint evaluation is intended to provide the student constructive feedback on strengths and weaknesses and offer recommendations to improve.
Candidate Requirements
Skills
-
The ability to apply skills learned at university to a R&D laboratory environment.
-
Strong theoretical knowledge of HPLC/UHPLC and mass spectrometry, and awareness of other related analytical techniques including NMR, GC, UV-vis, FTIR, and titrimetry.

Strong numerical and analytical skills, and a sound knowledge of chemistry.

English language - excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with their supervisor, individually and as part of a team.

Good listening skills, the ability to follow instructions and the confidence to make suggestions where appropriate.

Strong organization skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage tasks within defined deadlines.
