Full Job Description

Support Millboard’s laboratory with testing raw materials and products, helping ensure quality, compliance and supporting product development while gaining a Level 3 Lab Technician qualification.

Qualification Requirements

  • GCSEs (including Science and Maths) or equivalent; A‑level or Level‑3 science qualifications advantageous

  • Basic laboratory skills: weighing, mixing, sample preparation, use of hand tools and measuring devices; competent with Microsoft Excel. Advantageous

  • Understanding of SOPs, traceability, and quality concepts (e.g., calibration, non‑conformance, right‑first‑time); willingness to learn ISO‑aligned ways of working

Salary - £18-25k per annum

Working Hours
Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm (subject to change depending on business needs) 30 minute lunch break and 2 further 15 minute paid breaks.

Job Description

Role Purpose:

To support Millboard’s Materials laboratory with accurate, timely testing of raw materials and finished products, contributing to product compliance, process control, and new product development (NPD). The role builds foundational laboratory competence while upholding Millboard’s values and safety standards.

Scope:

Works day-to-day in the Materials and Analytical Laboratories, collaborating with Production, Quality, Engineering, and NPD. Interfaces with external testing partners (e.g., fire testing laboratories) and follows documented SOPs, H&S controls, and ISO-aligned practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct sampling and basic physical/chemical tests on incoming raw materials; record results and escalate non‑conformances

  • Perform in‑process and final inspection checks on moulded boards/cladding as directed by Quality Technicians/Engineers

  • Prepare, label, and log test panels for external fire classification programmes (e.g., SBI), coordinating with partners

  • Support NPD trials: weigh/mix small batches, de‑gas where required, and capture trial data to aid repeatability and right‑first‑time outcomes

  • Maintain laboratory housekeeping (5S), consumables stock, and waste‑segregation procedures; contribute to safe working practices and near‑miss reporting

  • Assist with routine equipment checks and calibration scheduling, ensuring records are complete and auditable

  • Update Excel trackers; produce clear, concise test summaries management reviews

  • Follow SOPs and Work Instructions; participate in continuous improvement and ISO audit readiness activities

  • Test turnaround achieved against agreed service levels for raw materials and in‑process inspection (e.g., % completed within 24–48h)

  • Data quality: zero critical errors in logs; ≥98% right‑first‑time results across routine tests

Things To Be Considered

  • This is an onsite laboratory role, requiring comfort working with raw materials, chemicals, and production samples.

  • PPE is required at all times in designated lab areas (provided by the employer).

  • Some manual handling may be required when preparing or moving test materials.

  • Laboratory spaces may involve noise, odours, or temperature variations depending on testing activity.

  • Parking space is provided on site for apprentices.

  • Public transport availability may vary — candidates should check routes and travel plans ahead of time.

  • Occasional off‑site travel may be required for external testing or training provider attendance
