Full Job Description

This role involves working as part of a process team to ensure operation of the rape seed oil Crush & Refinery departments, working to high safety, quality and efficiency standards. During the apprenticeship, you will participate in a recognised training programme in science manufacturing along with comprehensive on-the-job training.

Qualification Requirements
GCSE English & Maths grade 4+ plus other strong GCSEs to include Science or other higher level qualifications

Working Hours
Day shift, Monday to Friday with potential for shift work as experience grows. Appropriate remuneration will be in place for stepping into other positions

Duration - 27 months

Job Purpose and Impact

The role involves working as part of a process team to ensure the successful operation of the Crush and Refinery departments while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency. During the apprenticeship, the incumbent will participate in a recognised Science Manufacturing training programme alongside comprehensive on-the-job training.

You will learn about the crushing and refining of rapeseed and soybeans, as well as the associated oil and meal products that are supplied to many household brands. You will be exposed to mechanical equipment, automated systems, and the chemistry behind the process of producing edible oils for supermarkets, restaurants, and takeaways, as well as animal feed (meal) for the farming community.

Job Responsibilities

  • Train towards and demonstrate competency in the safe and effective operation of process equipment across the plant.

  • Perform in-process quality control and analytical checks to ensure product quality and compliance with site standards.

  • Work towards and successfully complete the Level 3 Process Industry Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship.

  • Support plant operations through front-line maintenance, housekeeping, and other production-related activities as required.

  • Maintain quality systems, operational logs, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Keep detailed training records to support apprenticeship progress, training activities, and studies.

Training To Be Delivered

Qualification to be delivered: SIAS L3 Diploma in Understanding Process industry Manufacturing

Apprenticeship Standard: Process Industry Manufacturing Technician

Training Provider: Cogent Skills

Delivery model: Training for this apprenticeship will be completed online


Future Prospects

Potential to become a Site Support Technician or Process Technician. Starting salary £22k per annum rising with training with the first increase being after 12 months and further thereon based on performance. Future potential salary earnings in excess of £60k.

Things To Be Considered

  • The process environment can be a very noisy and dusty environment i.e. extensive use of PPE is mandatory across the site (safety glasses, hard hat, ear protection etc)

  • Exposure to chemical systems and bulk chemical handling

  • Shift pattern consistent with a 24hr – 365 day operation

  • Plant personnel are exposed to changing weather conditions e.g. working outside the operational buildings

  • High expectation of safety standards should be the driver for anyone working in this environment.

  • Willingness to challenge the status quo and innovate for continuous improvement

  • Seaforth site is harder to access without own transport
