Full Job Description

Science Technician - Secondary Education - Merton

Are you an organised science professional who enjoys practical work and would like to contribute to the learning of young people?

A secondary school in Merton is seeking a dedicated Science Technician to support its laboratories and teaching staff from November 2026.

This is a part-time, Monday to Wednesday role, initially for approximately one term, with a strong possibility of extension. You will join a busy science department where your preparation and technical expertise will support teachers in delivering effective practical lessons.

The Role

Working as part of the science team, you will prepare and organise the equipment and resources required for practical teaching. You will work closely with teachers to understand lesson requirements and ensure laboratories are properly prepared before lessons.

The role combines practical preparation, equipment management, laboratory support and wider departmental responsibilities.

Main Duties

  • Prepare apparatus, chemicals and other resources for practical lessons.
  • Read and interpret teachers' practical requirements.
  • Set up laboratory equipment ahead of lessons.
  • Assist with experiments and demonstrations where required.
  • Clean, maintain and safely store scientific equipment.
  • Keep laboratories tidy, functional and appropriately organised.
  • Monitor consumable supplies and assist with stock management.
  • Report equipment faults and support appropriate follow-up.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Provide general technical support to the science department.

Candidate Profile

We would welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate:

  • A relevant degree, scientific qualification or practical laboratory background.
  • Experience using scientific equipment and following laboratory procedures.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A good understanding of safe working practices.
  • The ability to prioritise workload and meet lesson deadlines.
  • A professional and collaborative approach.
  • Confidence working in a secondary school environment.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Working Pattern & Flexible Working

This vacancy is advertised as a part-time role working Monday to Friday, reflecting the school's current requirements.

Employees have the legal right to request flexible working from their first day of employment. Applications from candidates seeking a flexible working arrangement are welcomed, and any requests will be considered in line with the requirements of the role and the school.

This wording reflects current GOV.UK guidance that adverts should highlight the legal right to request flexible working and be clear about flexibility around the role.

Why Apply?

  • Part-time opportunity from November 2026.
  • Monday to Friday working pattern.
  • Initial placement of approximately one term.
  • Strong possibility of extension.
  • Opportunity to develop school-based technical experience.
  • Work alongside experienced science teachers.
  • Varied and practical day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Competitive rate of pay.
  • Ongoing support from your dedicated recruitment consultant.
  • Excellent opportunity within Merton.

If you have the scientific knowledge, practical ability and organisational skills needed to support a busy school laboratory, we would be pleased to hear from you.
