Full Job Description

Synthetic Chemist

Lancashire

Permanent opportunity

We are working with a global leader in the laboratory chemicals sector who are dedicated to improving global health and safety through cutting-edge R&D.

Operating from a high-spec facility in Lancashire, they are looking for a Synthetic Development Chemist. This role is taking complex chemical concepts from literature searches through to bench-scale synthesis and eventual production scale-up.

What you’ll do:

As a Synthetic Development Chemist, you will be actively engaged in synthetic chemistry activities, designing new processes across various scales ranging from milligrams to kilograms up to 20 litres.

You will be the bridge between initial research and full-scale manufacturing, ensuring all new routes are safe, scalable, and efficient. Responsibilities will be in the following areas:

  • Route Design: Designing and developing innovative synthetic routes for complex molecules using retro-synthetic analysis.
  • Hands-on Synthesis: Executing multi-step synthesis, purification, and characterisation in the laboratory.
  • Analytical Interpretation: Using analytical techniques and teamworking with Analytical Chemist colleagues. Instruments used are NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, and DSC to interpret data and work out process improvements.
  • Process Safety: Carrying out assessments and ensuring all bench scale activities are fit for safe transfer to larger scales.
  • Documentation: Maintaining detailed bench-books and preparing technical reports for internal collaborators and external clients.
  • Continuous Improvement: Using database tools like Reaxys and MestReNova to optimize chemical procedures for better yield and efficiency.

You will work in a fast-paced, client-focused environment, collaborating closely with custom & bulk teams and product management. As you grow in the role, you will also have the opportunity to mentor junior technicians and provide cover for senior staff.

Your background:

We are looking for a driven scientist with a strong foundation in organic or medicinal chemistry. Educated to BSc, MSc, or PhD and with a deep understanding of synthetic chemistry. This is a role that called for experience working in industry or academic post study work.

  • A demonstrable record in complex synthetic chemistry (demonstrated via industry experience or academic publications).
  • Experience in a CDMO, CRO, or fine chemical environment is advantageous.
  • Experience in MestReNova and Reaxys (or similar reaction search databases) is advantageous..
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • A proactive, safety-first mindset and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

This is a standard Monday to Friday role that offers a "championing" environment with significant investment in professional growth. Our client provides the resources of a multi-billion dollar organisation while maintaining a close-knit, innovative laboratory culture at their laboratory in Lancashire. Their location is also in a scenic part of the UK for nice lunchtimes surrounded by nature, all the nicer to have as we approach Summer!

On this occasion, LiCa Scientific is acting as an employment agency.
