Discover A Career in The

Nuclear

Sector

Atoms are incredible! These tiny units make up all matter in the universe, and by harnessing the energy that holds them together, scientists can change how we generate the power of today and tomorrow.

Nuclear energy generates around one-fifth of the UK’s electricity

Explore a world where tiny atoms power

...a global society!

You may have heard of nuclear energy at school or on TV… but what is it?!

Nuclear energy can create electricity to power homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals. It is made at a nuclear reactor or power plant where atoms are split in a process called nuclear fission. This releases lots of useful energy.

The government regulates the nuclear sector very carefully to ensure it is a safe industry. In fact, nuclear energy is a very established energy source, having been used in the UK for over 60 years.

The leading-edge of nuclear science

Unlike renewable energy sources like solar or wind, nuclear energy is not reliant on the weather. It can be produced 24 hours a day.

The science behind nuclear processes is much more advanced than that of coal- or gas-fired power stations. That means the industry is crying out for bright, young talent like you.

Today, labs are working with the nuclear sector to develop new reactors and fuels, improving technologies even further and reducing the amount of nuclear waste produced.

What is the future of nuclear energy?

The UK is keen to generate more home-grown power. Relying on imported fuel for energy can be difficult if prices rocket or suppliers are limited.

On top of this, the UK has said it aims to be net-zero or “carbon neutral” by 2050. This is when the same amount of greenhouse gases we produce are also removed to effectively keep the atmosphere balanced.

Given that nuclear is a clean and reliable energy source, the sector is likely to play a huge role in achieving these ambitious targets. More work means more job security.

However, remember it’s not all lab coats!

Alongside scientists, the chemical sector also needs skills in:

• engineering,
• health and safety,
• project planning,
• shift operations,
• science education,
• IT and software,
• environmental sustainability… and much more!
