With a background in chemistry / materials our client is looking for a chemist /materials scientist / or laboratory technician who would like be part of a global organisation supporting R&D Technical Support and the development and qualification of new materials and formats with the laboratory function for Materials, Product Development Projects, Qualifications and Failure Investigation.

As a technician or chemist or materials scientist you would be involved in testing, gathering, recording, and interpreting data in support of materials qualifications and technical support. The role requires the use of laboratory equipment at a setter level, preparation of chemical solutions, and handling of a range of materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop knowledge of prime materials, coatings, and other material requirements to support lab activities
  • Conduct laboratory and pilot line tests of materials, containers and ends.
  • Evaluate container performance, physical and chemical testing.
  • Work closely with project managers, material scientists and other technicians in the group to understand the correct testing to assess the material properties.
  • Gather, interpret, and record data using computers and online systems.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab equipment and pilot line machinery.
  • Responsible for the delivery of technical data in support of projects and service work.
  • Contribute to maintain and support continuous improvement with the lab and high standards for safety and quality by ensuring work instructions, risk assessments, 5S and documentation audits, training records and equipment maintenance are current and in compliance with company requirements.
  • Participate on-going improvement of the laboratories and equipment, capability, knowledge management and transfer of best practices.
  • Insightful interpretation and formal reporting of results and updating the Work Management System
  • Planning own work in the Development Coating Materials lab
  • Managing multiple project and support requests.
  • Selecting the correct techniques to investigate defects in materials performance
  • Selecting the correct techniques to make sure results reflect the real life of the product
  • Compliance with the environmental, health, and safety aspects of the laboratories that are used by many people with different level of training
  • Guiding colleagues (within and outside of team) on materials assessments

Qualifications / Experience

  • Background in chemistry or materials or materials engineering
  • Laboratory experience with materials preferred
  • Practical person with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Competent operating equipment and machinery
  • Ability to record, summarize and present data
  • Use of computer (MS Excel, Word, Outlook). Creative and with ability to solve problems
  • Steel/tinplate/polymer industry experience desirable
  • Demonstrable know-how and skills in managing materials evaluations
