Your new company
Hays Education are working in partnership with a well-established secondary school in Wigan to recruit a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Technician for a long-term position starting in September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive and forward-thinking science department, playing a key role in helping students access engaging and practical science lessons.
Your new role
As a Science Technician, you will provide essential support to teaching staff across Biology, Chemistry and Physics. You will be responsible for the preparation, organisation and maintenance of equipment and materials required for practical lessons, ensuring a safe and effective learning environment for both staff and students.
Key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and setting up equipment, chemicals and resources for practical science lessons.
  • Supporting teachers during practical demonstrations and investigations where required.
  • Maintaining, cleaning and storing laboratory equipment in line with health and safety regulations.
  • Monitoring and managing stock levels, ordering resources and maintaining accurate inventory records.
  • Ensuring laboratories, preparation rooms and storage areas remain safe, organised and compliant.
  • Carrying out routine safety checks and risk assessments in accordance with school policies.
  • Assisting with the disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials following relevant procedures.
  • Supporting the wider Science Department with administration and resource management duties.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Previous experience working as a Science Technician, Laboratory Technician or within a scientific environment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise workloads effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with teachers and staff.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to supporting the needs of the Science Department.
  • An enhanced DBS on the update service, or willingness to obtain one through Hays.
